That's good!
Throughout my career in the security industry, I remember being described as a "Professional Paranoid" wow what a nice thing to say, I was flattered. It seems these days of being politically correct, anytime someone hangs a questionable title on you, the expectation is to freak out and become defensive. Not me, not about that at least. I'm okay with the title as long as it's not clinical, who cares?
I am a bit paranoid, and why not? I read the papers, watch the news, and talk to people that have been or know victims of crime, adversity and or who life has just handed them the shitty end of a really pointy stick.
I prefer to subscribe the the Boy Scout outlook of being prepared. I sleep (not often) better knowing that there probably really is a Boogie Man out there and it's up to me to keep him away from me and mine. Most survivors think like this, we believe that its far easier, cheaper, faster, better to avoid becoming a victim then it is to recover from just such an encounter.
Gavin De Becker writes about seeing the world in it's true colors. His insight helps us stay focused and one step ahead. All of his books are worth reading, their lessons worth learning and a truer understanding of what qualifies a person to be victim or survivor. He is respected throughout the world as a security professional that puts a high value on common sense, gut feelings and being personally responsible for ones own safety. I couldn't agree more.
In my years of exposure to some of the more interesting sides of the "human condition" I found that most people are capable of some wonderful and terrible things depending on the circumstance. What do we have to lose from being part of the good side of human nature? very little, in fact it makes us better people ourselves. However the dark side of man is a cancer that is so easily spread that we must avoid it or learn to fight against it. Limit our exposure to it, survive it.
Such is the exchange of ideas here. Exposure to Law Enforcement, The Military, Personal Security Specialists and Recovery Experts have given me a unique outlook on the topic and these days with the fertilizer so ready to hit the ventilator, we have nothing to lose and every thing to gain by sharing.
